What is Therapy?

Therapy. Counseling. Psychotherapy. Mental Healthcare. Psychologist. Social Worker. Therapist. Counselor.

What does it all mean? Is one better for me than the next? Am I considered weak for getting help?

Here is your guide to all things therapy.

1. Counselor, Therapist, Psychologist, Social Worker ultimately mean the same thing. Though all are slightly different in their own way, a therapist, counselor, psychologist and social worker are trained mental healthcare providers that are here to understand you and help you find peace in a chaotic world.

2. Counseling is first and foremost about the working relationship built with your professional.

Making sure you click with the right person is half the battle. As a licensed social worker, I tend to use humor to help clients relax and enjoy their session. Through laughter we can envision our life experiences in a different way. We can build emotional strength and improve the quality of our relationships.

4. Therapists are here to listen, support you and reframe distorted or negative patterns of thinking.

Intrusive thoughts, constant worrying, low self worth all contribute to a poorer quality of life. Through reflection, processing and practice, therapists can help you "retrain" your brain to decrease negative thinking patterns, improve self-esteem, create healthy boundaries with toxic people, and build a new sense of self and well being.

5. Am I weak if I go to therapy?

The answer is....not a chance. Emotional intelligence is not something we are born with. Many people grow up in families that hide their feelings, explode on others, cast judgment on vulnerability, mask their symptoms with drugs or alcohol, shame others for their behavior, gaslighting others to deflect their own behavior and so on. We learn at an early age that some feelings are good and some are bad. There are no bad feelings...it is the way we handle them where the real transformation happens.

Talking about our life experience is a deeply personal activity. Counselors are there to listen, validate your experiences and feelings, provide insight, teach you about your feelings, coping and boundary setting. Counseling is confidential. Counseling can be fun. Counseling is necessary to learn emotional flexibility and give yourself the gift of self worth.
